๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After completing this lesson, the child should be able to:

  • Understand what a fraction is
  • Read fractions like 1/4 and 3/8
  • Add fractions with the same denominator
Cut a pizza and you have made fractions! They are just parts of a whole โ€” and they are delicious.

Meet the fraction

Cut a pizza into 4 equal slices. Each slice is 1/4 โ€” one part of four.

  • The top number counts the parts you have. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ• = 2 slices.
  • The bottom number tells how many parts make the whole. A 4-slice pizza โ†’ bottom is 4.

So 2 slices is 2/4 โ€” which is the same as 1/2, half the pizza!

Meet the family

  • 1/2 โ€” one half
  • 1/3 โ€” one third
  • 1/4 โ€” one quarter
  • 3/4 โ€” three quarters

Adding with the same slices

Same bottom numbers? Just add the tops:

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4
