- Explain addition as putting groups together
- Solve sums up to 10 with objects
- Write number sentences like 2 + 3 = 5
Addition means putting groups together. Let us start with apples โ the friendliest maths in the world.
Step 1: See it with apples
2 apples plus 3 apples:
๐ ๐ + ๐ ๐ ๐ = ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
Count them all: 5 apples!
Step 2: Write the number sentence
Instead of apples, we can write numbers:
2 + 3 = 5
The + sign means "put together". The = sign means "is the same as".
Step 3: Practice with pictures
Step 4: Try without pictures
Cover the apples with your hand and try: 4 + 2 = ? 3 + 3 = ? 5 + 1 = ?
Finish with a quiz!
