Reading Together, the Right Way

Cover → predict → read → question → discuss → retell. Six steps to real reading.

Ages 3–10 · EduManual Team · Original EduManual content.

💚 Why it matters: Reading together is the single strongest home activity for language. The magic is in the conversation around the book, not just in finishing it.

🧭 What parents can do

Follow the sequence: look at the cover, predict the story, read together, ask questions, discuss new words, and let your child retell it in their own words.

🪜 Step-by-step

  1. Look at the cover: what might the story be?
  2. Predict: what will happen?
  3. Read together — take turns
  4. Ask questions while reading
  5. Discuss any new words
  6. Ask your child to retell the story
✨ Example: Younger child (5–6): "What is the dog doing?" Older child (9–10): "Why do you think the character made that decision?"

🏡 Try this activity

Tonight, read one page each. Your turn, my turn. Then switch roles and let your child be the "teacher" who asks the questions.

❓ Questions to ask

  • “What do you think happens next?”
  • “How would you feel if you were the character?”
  • “What was your favourite part and why?”

⚠️ Common mistakes

Correcting every single misread word. Let small mistakes go; the flow matters more.

🤝 When to seek additional support: If reading is much harder than you expect for your child's age, discuss it with the teacher — early, kind support works wonders.
