🎯 Learning objectives

After completing this lesson, the child should be able to:

  • Understand that each number has a size
  • Count segments from 1 to 10
  • Order the rods into a staircase
In hands-on classrooms, children meet numbers by holding wooden rods. Each rod is a little longer than the last — and today we build the whole staircase!

Meet the number rods

Imagine ten wooden rods. The first is short and red. The second is longer, painted red-blue in two segments. Each rod grows by one segment:

  • Rod 1: one red segment
  • Rod 2: one red, one blue
  • Rod 3: red, blue, red
  • … all the way to rod 10, the longest of all!

Touch and count

Run your finger along each rod, counting the segments: "one… two… three…" Your finger learns the size of the number while your voice learns its name.

Build the staircase

Place the rods side by side, biggest first, and they make a beautiful staircase. If two rods are in the wrong place, the stair has a bump — you can see the mistake yourself and fix it. That is hands-on self-correction!
