Mastery Learning: Daily Math Practice

๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After this article, you should be able to:

  • Build a short daily math practice habit
  • Use a small-step ladder for addition
  • Track fluency and accuracy together

The secret of mastery math is not the practice pages โ€” it is the habit. Fifteen minutes, every day, one small step at a time.

Build your addition ladder

Start where your child is fast and sure, then add one step at a time:

WeekFocusExample
1+1 facts4 + 1, 7 + 1, 9 + 1
2+2 facts3 + 2, 6 + 2, 8 + 2
3Doubles3 + 3, 5 + 5, 8 + 8
4Mixed to 104 + 3, 2 + 6, 5 + 4

The daily session (10โ€“15 minutes)

  1. Warm up with five problems from last week โ€” success first.
  2. Today's step: ten problems on the new fact.
  3. Self-check: the child marks their own work with a coloured pencil. Finding your own mistake is a superpower.
  4. Correct any errors, and finish with one "star problem" for fun.

When to move up

Move to the next rung when the child completes the current set quickly and correctly โ€” not just once, but easily. Speed plus accuracy equals fluency.
