Learn Addition for Kids: The Apple Way
๐ฏ Learning objectives
After this article, you should be able to:
- Understand addition as putting groups together
- Solve simple addition problems up to 10
- Move from counting objects to number sentences
What is addition? Addition means putting groups together to see how many there are in total. The sign for addition is + (we say "plus").
Apples make it easy
Sam has 2 apples. Mia gives him 3 more apples. How many apples does Sam have now?
๐ ๐ + ๐ ๐ ๐
Count them all together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Sam has 5 apples!
We can write this as a number sentence:
2 + 3 = 5
The three steps
- See the first group: 2 apples.
- See the second group: 3 apples.
- Count everything together: 5 apples!
Practice corner
- 1 + 1 = ? (two balloons together!)
- 2 + 2 = ? (two cats and two more cats)
- 3 + 4 = ? (three stars and four stars)
Make it a game
At snack time, ask: "You have 3 raisins and I give you 2 more โ how many raisins?" Counting real things is the fastest way to make addition feel natural.
When you are ready, try our visual addition practice โ every question shows the apples before it shows the numbers.

The apple examples worked brilliantly for my son. We now do the raisin game at snack time!
